Biceps Tendon Injuries & Biceps Tendinitis
What is a Biceps Tendon Injury?
The biceps muscle is located at the front of the upper arm and plays a crucial role in flexing the elbow and rotating the forearm. A biceps tendon injury occurs when the tendon frays or tears away from its attachment site due to overuse, aging, or sudden trauma.
Biceps Tendinitis
Biceps tendinitis is the inflammation of the upper part of the biceps tendon, leading to shoulder pain. It is commonly seen in athletes or individuals who frequently engage in overhead lifting.
Symptoms of Biceps Tendon Injuries
- Sharp pain in the upper arm or shoulder
- A popping sensation at the time of injury
- Muscle cramping in the biceps
- Bruising or swelling
- Weakness in arm movement
Treatment Options
Non-Surgical Treatments
For mild cases, rest, ice therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications are recommended. Physical therapy may be introduced to restore movement.
Surgical Treatments
Severe tendon tears may require biceps tenodesis, where the damaged part of the tendon is removed and reattached to the upper arm bone.
